Emmeline Labiche: New Brunswick to Maryland & Louisiana, 1738-1790
Longfellow’s Evangeline was on the eve of her wedding when her true love Gabriel was seized by the English and deported with thousands of French Acadians. Emmeline Labiche’s descendants say she was the model for Longfellow’s adventurous heroine. Emmeline and her real-life lover Louis Arceneaux are commemorated at the Evangeline Oak in St. Martinville, Louisiana.
Pommier doux is a traditional New Brunswick chanson à répondre, learned from Acadian friends at Kouchibouguac National Park as arranged by Edith Butler. Under an apple tree, three princesses awake in the night to lament their lovers who have gone to war. The chorus lists items that the Acadians took with them to Louisiana (along with a few to fill out the rhyme): millet, straw, orange trees, tricoli (a grain), matches, pineapples, flint and steel, a blooming laurel, and beautiful, beautiful, beautiful birds.
