about

Like émigrés and refugees the world over, the place you come from is a state of mind. From Newfoundland's French Shore to La Louisiane, from PEI and Chéticamp to Brittany, but most of all in the heart of l'Acadie in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, they fly the Acadian flag. They paint it on their houses, they paint it on their faces, they fly it on their cars to match their license plates. It's Le Tricolor of France, but with La Belle Étoile des Marins, the bright morning star Maris Stella. Partons, la mer est belle is the unofficial national anthem of l'Acadie, and if you start it anywhere east of Ottawa, every Francophone in the place will jump in.

The last line in the chorus is "on voit briller l'étoile qui guide les matelots." See it shine, the star that guides the sailor. That's the star on the Acadian flag. I have the same sapphire star in my wedding ring.

lyrics

 REFRAIN

 Je n'ai plus que ma mère Qui ne possède rien;
Ramons, ramons bien vite, Je l'aperçois là-bas,
